Nexenta Announces Unique Software-Defined Storage Implementation for Leading Healthcare Cloud Provider
HIPAA Compliance and Cloud Hosting Solution Provider, VM Racks Relies on Nexenta for Unmatched TCO and Scalability for Secure Data Management
Santa Clara, CA. – September 24, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the deployment and case study for VM Racks. VM Racks delivers enterprise-class virtualization, government and HIPAA compliant web hosting solutions worldwide.
“VM Racks is a great example of a growing company that was potentially held back by the price and complexity of legacy storage solutions,” said Craig Cagle, VP and GM of Americas at Nexenta. “We are very pleased to be able to work with VM Racks and help them deliver their innovative HIPAA compliant hosting solution.”
Established in 1997, San Carlos, CA-based VM Racks handles the management, security and storage of medical information from healthcare companies and is known for delivering outstanding customer service and value-based web hosting plans. VM Racks’ enterprise-class virtualization solutions and managed hosting services support government, healthcare, and business organizations worldwide. As a certified HIPAA hosting provider, VM Racks maintains the highest level of audits and certifications including SSAE 16 SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, and SOC 3 Type 2. As the need for HIPAA compliance continues to grow, VM Racks' business continues to demonstrate strong growth.
Lowering their total cost of ownership was the single largest benefit to VM Racks.
"Had we gone with one of the market leaders, we would have been paying 10 times the cost for our storage solution and that cost would have been passed on to our customers," according to Gil Vidals, CEO at VM Racks. "Nexenta allowed us to implement an enterprise-quality solution, but let an entry-level company like us get our foot in the door. I've found that bigger storage vendors don't let growing companies like ours get a toehold the way that Nexenta did. Nexenta didn't say 'come back when you are big enough for us.' Because of the cost savings we've realized, we've been able to keep our HIPAA pricing the lowest in the industry and that's something that makes us very proud."
VM Racks now has more than 200 terabytes under management and is still growing. As the company grows, Nexenta's solution continues to scale.
"Nexenta took an interest in the success of our business and helped us to grow to where we are today," added Vidals. "Their sales, service, and engineering teams have all been a pleasure to work with.”
Please refer to the VM Racks case study for more implementation details.

Nexenta Runs the Cloud Infrastructure for Leading Public Safety Company
TriTech Software Systems Turns to Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Solutions in Serving 240 Million Citizens WW
Santa Clara, CA. – September 24, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the deployment and case study for TriTech Software Systems. TriTech provides innovative cloud-based solutions for public safety.
“TriTech is a great example of how software-defined storage can have a profound impact on business operations for cloud hosting providers,” said Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer at Nexenta. “Not only did Nexenta solve a scalability and efficiency problem for TriTech, but their customers also enjoy the cost savings and improved performance.”
TriTech Software Systems is headquartered in San Diego, CA. For over twenty years TriTech has led the market with innovative, enterprise-wide cloud-based and on-premise solutions for 9-1-1, computer aided dispatch, records management, jail management, analytics and intelligence, field-based reporting, patient care reporting, and ambulance billing software. More than 2,700 agencies, across seven countries – serving nearly a quarter of a billion citizens – rely on TriTech to make the drama of a 9-1-1 call a little less dramatic.
Given the complexity of the rules and regulations in the public safety industry, the data storage requirements are also significant. Images such as individual fingerprints and crime scene photos require constant uptime and the highest levels of security. In addition to images, TriTech also has to manage and integrate audio files such as 9-1-1 recorded calls, and data files such as background checks.
TriTech was eager to expand the existing NAS file system and replace several Drobos used for NFS and for VM Archiving, which didn't support a virtualized environment and were turning into an ongoing maintenance problem. A meeting with storage experts Aberdeen, a leading manufacturer and Nexenta reseller, at VMworld led to an introduction to and recommendation of NexentaStor.
According to TriTech System Administrator Scott Key: "The benefits of going with Nexenta came down to three important factors: TCO, simplicity, and manageability."
Prior to installing Nexenta, storage cost TriTech approximately five thousand dollars per terabyte; this was for a system that was showing real signs of strain at twenty terabytes. TriTech now pays approximately fifteen hundred dollars per terabyte and still has plenty of room to grow, reducing storage costs by 70%.
"The combined savings between lower storage costs, reduced maintenance and management needs added up to an amazing ROI," added Key. "The cost of our entire storage infrastructure was earned back in about six months."
Please refer to the TriTech case study for more implementation details.

Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Underpins Cloud Infrastructure at Acclaimed European Software Company
Software Defined Storage (SDS) Improves Storage Capacity and Reliability of Infrastructure for CRM Specialist, Statigest
Santa Clara, CA and Paris, France, 18 September, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) today announced it has been chosen by the 30 year veteran of French CRM software development, Statigest, to support its entire IT infrastructure. The SDS solution has boosted capacity and performance, significantly increasing Statigest's productivity and service levels.
Founded in 1977, Statigest provides CRM and related applications for sales forces across France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. With more than 5,000 daily users, the IT infrastructure plays a mission critical role. With so much at stake, the existing mixed environment of Unix and Windows was becoming difficult to manage, particularly because it was using a number of different file services (CIFS and NFS) protocols. Statigest needed a solution that was easier to manage, but that could increase capacity and deliver a performance boost for its users.
After evaluating a number of systems, Statigest chose Nexenta’s SDS solution, NexentaStor, because it supports many different protocols, including CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, Fiber Channel and SATA. This flexibility made it possible for Statigest to introduce hybrid storage pooling and improve the capabilities of the environment.
Christophe Grun, Infrastructure Manager at Statigest explained: “We evaluated the products of a number of suppliers but Nexenta was the best on performance and total cost of ownership (TCO). The clustering capability in NexentaStor was also a major benefit because it delivers enhanced stability with recovery from failover and it takes less than one minute.”
“By using NFS with NexentaStor, numerous database requests can now be launched simultaneously on the server. This has reduced production time by more than two hours and enables us to handle more customers at the same time. Production at Statigest splits storage between 80% write and 20% read. By using SSDs for ZIL and LOG cache, we have experienced a huge boost to NFS write which, in turn, has significantly increased overall performance.”
Philippe Bruiant, Regional Sales Manager, Nexenta said: “Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage solutions help customers implement cost-effective, high-performance storage by taking advantage of features such as hybrid storage pooling, unlimited snapshots, massive scalability and high availability. Our open source technology roots also mean that users like Statigest are not locked in to buying more expensive products from a particular vendor or paying unnecessary mark-ups for standard features.”

Nexenta Executive Joins Industry Executives to Discuss Software-Defined Storage and Open Source Business Models at OpenStack Silicon Valley 2014
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — September 16, 2014 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced that Chief Product Officer, Thomas Cornely will speak on September 16th at OpenStack Silicon Valley 2014 in Mountain View, CA. Thomas will join several industry executives on an Open Source Business Models panel to discuss the growing presence of open source software, its ability to support a variety of Cloud infrastructures, and how to achieve profitability in this rapidly evolving space.
Details are as follows:
Topic: Open Source Business Models: Open Core, Service + Support, or: a Third Option
Venue: Computer History Museum, 1401 N Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View, CA 94043
Date/Time: Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 11:50 am Pacific Time
Hosted by: OpenStack SV
Moderator: Mark Collier, COO, OpenStack Foundation
Panelists:
- Jonathan Donaldson | GM, Software Defined Infrastructure, Intel
- Alex Freedland | Chairman and co-Founder, Mirantis
- Thomas Cornely | Chief Product Officer, Nexenta Systems
- Brian Gentile | VP and GM, Tibco Jaspersoft
Abstract: When it’s free/libre/gratis, who gets to keep the money? Open source software is now the norm, not a niche. Its broad adoption as a defacto standard has exposed enormous unexploited inefficiencies. The breadth of OpenStack adoption will create new forms of monetization, even if you don’t know what they are. Giving up on finding “the next Red Hat” or the “next Cloudera” might mean you’re looking in the rear view mirror.
“A growing number of organizations view OpenStack as the leading platform for private, public and hybrid cloud environments,” said Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer of Nexenta, “Nexenta continues to develop Software Defined Storage solutions that integrate with this open source alternative, and end users choose Nexenta and OpenStack to avoid vendor lock-in, deliver flexible, modular and lower cost benefits for their infrastructures.”
