Nexenta Delivers Unparalleled Multi-Data Center Reliability, Scalability and Performance for Large and Distributed Cloud Deployments Based on Software Defined Storage
Nexenta and ATTO Technology Introduce NexentaStor MetroHA Stretch Cluster
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and AMHERST, N.Y. – July 21, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader of Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) solutions and ATTO Technology, a leading storage connectivity and infrastructure solution company, today jointly introduced NexentaStor MetroHA. Nexenta’s award-winning software now supports MetroHA configurations to deliver unparalleled availability, scalability and performance across multiple data centers.
NexentaStor MetroHA serves as a stretch cluster—a cluster configured with host systems located at multiple sites—allowing data to scale across different floors, buildings or cities, located up to 50 kilometers apart. The high availability and data mobility that stretch clusters offer provide the connectivity needed to load balance on-site or between two sites, delivering predictable availability during failure events. If a failure occurs at one site, there is continued workload availability and disaster recovery can seamlessly be carried out from the second location.
This proven solution gives data center managers the ability to protect business critical applications and eliminate the risk of data loss. MetroHA synchronously mirrors data between sites and ensures that in the event of a total site disruption, data services are restored at the secondary location or remote site within a matter of seconds, without any data loss.
ATTO’s FibreBridge 6500 Storage Controller, which supports the MetroHA, currently has more than 25,000 deployments worldwide with a failure rate of less than 0.1 percent, improving up-time by 75 percent on average and ultimately, significantly reducing maintenance costs. An accelerated engine maintains priority for data transfers and eases the workload of attached central processing units (CPUs), increasing process efficiency. The controller allows multiple nodes to attach to the same group of storage, streamlining server commands and increasing scalability.
NexentaStor is Nexenta’s flagship OpenSDS platform that delivers unified file and block storage services for demanding storage infrastructures by increasing flexibility and scalability, simplifying data management and dramatically reducing costs without sacrificing reliability. NexentaStor has been deployed by more than six thousand customers globally.
“Software-defined storage was a key requirement in creating a successful stretch cluster and as the market leader, Nexenta was the clear choice,” said Thomas Kolniak, Director of Products at ATTO Technology. “Nexenta’s technical superiority and comparatively low cost added tremendous value. NexentaStor allowed us to deliver the highest levels of scalability, reliability and data integrity, eliminating the geographic constraints of the past.”
“Our Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage solutions maximize flexibility and choice for our customers. By partnering with ATTO Technology, we continue to expand the set of enterprise applications that can benefit from Nexenta solutions” said Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer at Nexenta. “With zero data loss and continuous operations in the event of site failures, NexentaStor MetroHA is designed to meet the most stringent availability requirements of our enterprise customers.”
Pricing
The NexentaStor list price per GB ranges for larger capacity (1PB) levels is $0.18/GB including support. Prices can decrease with volume and per year based on support. Nexenta also provides a two tier distribution model. When purchasing NexentaStor with the separate MetroHA license, a Gold Level or higher support starting a $4,900, as well as on-site installation from a certified partner starting at $25k, is required.

Leading UK Virtual Desktop Provider Selects Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Solutions to Support Its Portfolio of Cloud Services
Santa Clara, CA and London, UK – July 9, 2015 – Nexenta, (@Nexenta) the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that VESK, the UK’s largest provider of hosted virtual desktops, has chosen NexentaStor to support its increasing storage and IOPS requirements (Input/Output Operations per Second), and growing portfolio of cloud services.
Founded in 2009, VESK’s customers range from local government organisations with more than 500 employees to small business with as few as three users. It was one of the first companies to implement and support the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in Britain and, in recent years, it has expanded into providing cost-effective, accessible platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) capabilities from its three data centres – located in London, Singapore and the US.
However, as its client base and cloud offering grew, VESK continually found storage issues barring the way to future and sustainable growth – not only could its current business model no long support any underutilisation of expensive storage equipment, but the management of an extended storage area network (SAN) risked swamping system administrators. Equally, with the need for a higher IOPS and 100 percent performance level uptime for high density applications, recurring issues like low caching ability and limited network speed further constricted the company’s development. Despite having more than 70 hyper-visor servers running, the legacy SAN was the crux of the problem.
VESK turned to NexentaStor as it needed a solution that could provide an agile and expandable architecture, one that is scalable to overcome random IOPS and could grow with the company. “We have huge IOPS requirements for a range of I/O (Input/Output) profiles and Nexenta enables us to optimise and fulfil application and desktop needs from the storage layer upward,” said Richard De Napoli, head of infrastructure at VESK. “The solution gave us a strong storage foundation to expand into IaaS, PaaS, and DaaS.”
The solution, NexentaStor High Availability (HA) Cluster in a SAN, provides VESK with more than 130TB of raw storage, as well as read and write SSD caching. Disaster recovery – backup and retrieval – is also dramatically increased with VESK’s three disaster recovery locations connect via 10GbE dark fibre and provided with an hourly data auto-sync. Furthermore, unlike with other suppliers’ solutions, NexentaStor enables VESK to cluster so it can simply add more SANs when required, removing the need to purchase a new solution when capacity is insight.
“VESK needed a storage solution that could keep up with, and facilitate, its continued growth,” explained Mark Jordan, VP, GM EMEA at Nexenta. “Its previous setups were simply not agile enough and prevented it from meeting the high demands of its client base. NexentaStor not only empowers VESK to provide for its existing customers with higher performance and reliability, but it also means VESK has a flexible and scalable architecture that can be easily expanded to meet the needs of tomorrow’s users too.”
The business was conducted via VA Technologies, a Nexenta Reseller and high performance system integrator based in Bedfordshire, UK.

Nexenta to Demonstrate Open Source-Driven Software-Defined Data Center Solutions at Cisco Live 2015
Santa Clara, Calif.—June 8, 2015—Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced its participation in Cisco Live 2015, including a live demo of the Multi-Tenant File and Block Services on the Cisco UCS Server.
Service providers are leading the way in the transition to the Software-Defined Data Center but it is the customers that drive the security and infrastructure needs of these providers. Having storage isolation and flexibility with the cloud is key for most hybrid cloud customers. Utilizing the NexentaStor solution both for backend file and block services, service providers and enterprises can gain independence from the vendor lock-in of traditional storage. Combine this with the Nexenta Virtual NAS solutions, and customers can manage and provision file and block services within their own virtual realm. The advanced memory architecture of the Cisco UCS Server solutions allow for more virtual servers and virtual NAS per host providing for a lower total cost and higher density of VMs than with traditional commodity hardware.
Nexenta’s technical team will demonstrate these benefits throughout the conference at Booth #1225 on the Cisco Live exhibition floor. The demonstration will feature the Multi-Tenant Virtual NAS and NexentaStor, displaying NexentaStor running on the Cisco UCS platform. Additionally, we’ll be highlighting integration with VMware vSphere, vCenter, vCenter plugins and VSAN.
The company will also be offering raffle tickets to booth attendees for a chance to win an Apple Watch. The drawing will take place on Wednesday, June 10, at 5:00pm PDT in Nexenta booth #1225.

Global Leader in IT Consulting and Systems Integration Runs on Nexenta Open Source-driven Software Defined Storage Solutions
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – June 3, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that Wipro Ltd. (NYSE:WIT) , a leading multinational IT consulting and System Integration company, has deployed NexentaStor to support the migration of more than 15,000 employees to VirtuaDesk, the company’s VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) solution. The company also plans to deploy NexentaStor for hundreds of thousands of customers.
Wipro designed VirtuaDesk, leveraging Wipro IP and industry standard reference architecture and software. Wipro integrated VirtuaDesk software with the NexentaStor Software-Defined Storage platform to provide scalable and cost-efficient user data storage. The company further added a layer of automation which reduces the administrative burden.
“We needed a scalable and cost-effective file storage solution for our VDI implementation. With Nexenta, we could achieve great performance while scaling the storage capacity without additional expenses.” said Seshu Kumar G V, Delivery Head for VirtuaDesk, Wipro.
Wipro supports its clients by creating successful and adaptive IT solutions. As part of this mission, Wipro wanted to help clients reduce their IT cost, complexity, and management burden by providing a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solution.
Wipro has deployed NexentaStor in four of its data centers in India on x86 hardware. Currently, the Nexenta solution provides one petabyte of storage across four locations. Wipro will scale it up as it continues rolling out VirtuaDesk DaaS, taking advantage of the scalability of the base implementation.
Wipro's employees see no difference between their PCs and their new virtual desktops; instead, they experience greater flexibility and improved performance. This transformation of the work environment from a fixed-seat to a location-independent workspace enables better collaboration among Wipro’s engineers, helping them to form virtual teams with people in different locations.
“We are excited to be a part of Wipro’s continued success and witness the results they’re seeing with their VDI offerings and increasing revenue,” said Tarkan Maner, CEO and Chairman at Nexenta. “Wipro can now offer customers the same flexibility their employees experience in virtual work environments, powered by Nexenta.”
Wipro has already begun to see cost savings from deploying VirtuaDesk DaaS and Nexenta, and expects these savings to increase as it rolls out the solution to more employees. Most of the savings in hardware came from storage, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of the typical per-seat hardware cost of a VDI deployment. The company is also expecting increased revenues from offering this cost-effective, high-performing VirtuaDesk DaaS to its customers.
“We are excited to continue working with Nexenta on our internal Wipro company storage requirements and offer the same solution to Wipro’s customers,” concluded Seshu Kumar.
Please refer to the Wipro Case Study for more implementation details.

Santa Clara, Calif.– June 2, 2015 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader of Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) solutions, today announced that CEO and Chairman, Tarkan Maner; customer, Northern Arizona University (NAU); and SDS block and file storage product, NexentaStor, have all been recognized as finalists in three separate categories of The 2015 American Business Awards, and will ultimately be named as a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Stevie® Award winners in the program.
The American Business Awards are considered the nation’s preeminent business awards program. All organizations operating in the U.S.A. are eligible to submit nominations – public and private, for-profit and non-profit, large and small.
The American Business Awards will be presented at two awards events: the ABA's traditional banquet on Monday, June 22 in Chicago and the new product and technology awards event on Friday, September 11 in San Francisco.
More than 3,300 nominations from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted this year for consideration in a wide range of categories, including Startup of the Year, Executive of the Year, Best New Product or Service of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, Live Event of the Year, and Human Resources Department of the Year, among others.
Tarkan Maner, CEO and Chairman at Nexenta, was named a finalist in the “Executive of the Year” category for computer services and software with up to 500 employees. Maner has been accredited with driving Nexenta’s continued success and is recognized for his leadership as a global thought leader, investor and advisor in the Information Technology industry. NexentaStor has also been an important part of Nexenta’s success and was named a finalist in the “New Product or Service of the Year” category for cloud platforms, storage and backup solutions. The product has been recognized for delivering unified file and block storage services, allowing thousands of customers around the world to evolve their storage infrastructure by increasing performance and flexibility and dramatically reducing cost.
“I am honored to be named a finalist for the ‘Executive of the Year’ award and am thrilled our flagship OpenSDS platform, NexentaStor, has also been named a finalist by the American Business Awards,” said Tarkan Maner, CEO and Chairman at Nexenta. “We, of course, could not achieve this recognition without the help of our customers and partners. I would like to congratulate the IT team at Northern Arizona University on their recognition as a finalist and thank them for their ongoing support.”
Nexenta customer, Northern Arizona University, was named a finalist in the “Information Technology Team of the Year” category for companies with up to 2,500 employees. NAU’s IT team has been recognized for their implementation of Nexenta’s software-defined storage solutions to support the storage needs of more than 27,000 students and faculty across 36 different campuses.
"On behalf of the entire Student Computing and Networking team of NAU's Information Technology Services, it is a true pleasure to acknowledge being chosen as a finalist and to have had the support of Nexenta to achieve our goals and this honor," said Tobias Kreidl, Academic Computing Team Lead at Northern Arizona University. "We continue to build on this rewarding experience and reap its benefits as our NexentaStor environment grows."
Finalists were chosen by scores of business professionals nationwide during first-round judging in April and May. Members of several specialized judging committees will determine Stevie Award placements from among the Finalists during final judging, to take place later this month.
“So many fascinating and inspiring stories of success were submitted to the ABAs this year,” said Stevie Awards president and founder Michael Gallagher. “We congratulate all of our 2015 Finalists on their achievements.”
